Reeves
and Schill Pickup First 2007 Wins; Strand and Dobmeier
continue Dominance
By Mike Orness
It was
Hall of Fame night at River Cities Speedway with three new
members being inducted to the Hall of Fame. Dennis Spieker,
Bob Amundson, and John Albrechtsen were those inducted and
presented a plaque by Jim Corcoran. The races were sponsored
by Interstate Power Systems – Goodyear and Home Of Economy.
There
were three heat races for the Unicel Street Stocks in which
Jim Geringer started outside pole of the first race and won.
Aaron Olson also started outside pole of the second race and
grabbed the lead first to continue on and collect his sixth
heat race this year with Cliff Reeves a close second. The
third and final heat race for the street stocks was won by
Rick Beier from the second starting spot over first time
visitor Bryce Corneliusen.
The
Dempsey Truck Service DTRA/MDRA Midwest Modifieds ran two
heat races with Patrick Sobolik claiming his first heat race
win at RCS this year. Ryan Schroeder was second with Joe
Freeman third. Late Model driver Doyle Erickson has won
elsewhere with his Midwest Modified, so he decided to give
it a try at the Action track. Erickson drew the pole
position and grabbed the lead and continued on for his first
heat race win in a Midwest Modified at RCS. Andy Neumann and
Dave Riopelle followed him across the ND Eye Clinic finish
line.
There
were eighteen DTRA Late Model teams spit into three heat
races sponsored by Atek Parts. The first heat race was won
by pole-sitter Steve Anderson with Cody Skytland coming from
the fourth spot to finish second. Joey Pederson started on
the pole of the second heat race and led all but two laps.
Mike Balcaen was running second to Pederson when Pederson
pulled off the track giving Balcaen the lead and the win.
Troy Schill crossed the finish line ahead of Brad Seng to
finish behind Balcaen. Dale Skytland started outside of Tom
Corcoran for the third and final heat race. Skytland was
scored as the leader and led every lap thereafter to claim
the win. Chad Corbett was second after a yellow flag sent
Corcoran tailend.
During
the Eide Motors NOSA Sprint Car heat races, Dan Wiskow and
Shane Roemeling brought the field of seven cars around to
the green flag with Dobmeier shooting forward and grabbing
the lead on the first lap from the last row. Dobmeier
collected his seventh heat race wind at RCS with Chris Burke
second followed by Shane Roemeling. Bob Martin grabbed the
lead from Tom Egeland during the second heat race for the
win. Egeland slowed and pulled off as well as Nick Shirek.
Monson and McDonald chased Martin across the line. Heat
three was won by outside pole-sitter, Greg Nikitenko.
Nygaard and Sobczak raced past Lou Kennedy to finish second
and third to Nikitenko.
Just
before intermission and the introductions of the Hall of
Fame Inductees, there was a B-Main ran for the Street
Stocks. Greg Neumann and Steve Jose were running first and
second with Shannon Swedin in the mix. When the checkered
flag waved it was Steve Jose that would cross the checkered
flag first with Neumann and Bryce Reimer second and third.
After
the brief intermission the Unicel MDRA/DTRA Street Stocks
were ready to race with Dan Arends and Aaron Olson on the
front row for a fifteen lap feature event. With only one lap
complete and two yellows, Aaron Olson was leading the rest
with Arends in second. Snare had moved up to third from the
sixth starting spot in just one lap. The field was under
green for a half lap when the next caution came out and
charged to Tyson Anderson. The restart would be called back
because Anderson hit the front
stretch cone and was sent to the pits for two yellows.
Another caution flag flew with just two full laps complete
and was charged to Fugleberg for a spin in turn four. With
Aaron Olson in the led, Snare had moved past Arends for the
second spot but going into turn one, Olson’s transmission
exploded and as a result Snare ended up cutting down a tire
and was forced pitside to change a tire and start tailend.
As a result this would give the lead to Dan Arends with
Sheldon Peterson second and Cliff Reeves third. On the
restart Petersone slipped back which put Reeeves in second
with Kyle Leake third. Just two laps later the sixth caution
of the night and the time limit forced officials to go with
a green white checkered finish. It looked as if Arends would
be able to hold off Reeves for the win, but that wasn’t the
case as Reeves passed Arends for the lead and his first ever
win at River Cities Speedway. Arends settled for second as
Joe Potter finished the night with a strong run from the
seventeenth starting spot and was named Shawn Horn’s hard
charger for the night. Peterson finished fourth with Jim
Geringer rounding out the top five coming from the tenth
spot.
The
Dempsey Truck Service DTRA/MDRA Midwest Modifieds were next
to complete their feature with current points leader, Dustin
Strand on the pole and Rod Peterson outside of him on the
front row. Doyle Erickson and Andy Neumann made up the
second row. On the start Strand was able to grab the lead
and lead every lap unchallenged for his fifth win at River
Cities and I believe twentieth of the season overall. Doyle
Erickson pass Peterson for the second spot earlier in the
race before he retired to the pits with seven laps complete.
Rod Peterson also retired to the pits after the next restart
giving up the second spot to either Sobolik or Neumann. Both
raced hard but it was Sobolik that would secure the spot
with SanGrait coming on fast late in the race to pass
Neumann for the third spot. Neumann was joined by Dave
Riopelle in the next couple laps and passed Sobolik for the
second and third spots. With five laps to go, the last
caution came out and was charged to Vargason. This would set
up a dash to the checkered but first they would have to
catch Strand.
Strand
was able to open up enough of a lead and won the race.
Patrick Sobolik raced back to the second spot with James
SanGrait also passing Neumann and Riopelle to claim the
third spot.
Next up
was the feature race for the Atek Parts DTRA Super Late
Models. Dustin Hapka and Todd Truedson started the group
from the front row. With no laps in, the first caution came
out with Hapka in the lead and was charged to Seng. Anderson was close to Hapka in the corners and
looked to take over the lead, but the second caution flag
would wave for a pileup of cars just out of turn four.
Burke, Tom Balcaen, and Truedson were caught up in the mess,
with Balcaen and Truedson retiring for the night. Hapka
still led and brought the field around to the next green
flag. There was another caution for Steven Anderson who got
into Hapka in turn one. Hapka suffered a flat left rear,
pitted to change the tire and started tailend behind
Anderson. This
would give Troy Schill the lead with Dale and Cody Skytland
second and third. The race went caution free the rest of the
way with Schill holding off Balcaen and the Skytland’s for
the feature win. Balcaen settled for second, with Dale
Skytland third, Cody Skytland fourth and Brad Seng coming
from the back, after the early caution to finish fifth.
There
were twenty-four teams that would start the Eider Motors
Sprint Car feature race. Roemeling and Monson started on the
front row with Nikitenko and Burke in the second row.
Roemeling grabbed the early lead with McDonald shooting
forward from the fifth spot. Monson was running third when
McDonald grabbed the lead from Roemeling with just two laps
complete. The yellow flag would wave for Mack, Linnell, and
Matejcek who tangled in turn two. Mack made repairs as did
the others and restarted tailend. Dobmeier started ninth and
would take over the lead on the next set of green flag laps
by passing McDonald and Nikitenko. After the next brief
caution, Dobmeier would continue to lead, but it was Martin
and Sobczak that would add the pressure to McDonald and
Nikitenko for a top five finishing spot. In the closing laps
with Dobmeier’s lead secure, Martin passed Nikitenko and
Sobczak for the second spot with Nikitenko slipping back to
fourth but was able to pass Sobczak back for the third
finishing spot while McDonald settled for the fifth spot
behind Sobczak after leading the race.
