New Week, New Faces in Victory Lane

Potter, Veert, and Pederson win WISSOTA Features, Dobmeier Doubles Up Again

Prepared by Orness Creations

Grand Forks, ND 5/29/09

A new week and some warmer led to some new faces in the Rydell Chevy Victory Lane. The one repeat feature winner was Mark Dobmeier in the NOSA Outlaw Sprint division. Whitey’s and Miller Lite were the nightly sponsors of the race for what turned out to be one of the best attendance nights for 2009.

In the Transystems Street Stock division, feature winner from last week, Tyson Anderson won the second of two heat races, while Greg Neumann won the first heat race from the pole. During the feature event on the opening lap, there was a caution for Bryce Reimer which would move the outside row up on spot with him tagging the field on the restart. This put Joe Potter outside Greg Neumann on the front row. Potter and Neumann raced side by side for the first lap, but then it was all Potter till the closing laps. As the laps clicked away, Steffen Snare closed in on Potter and just before the last caution, Snare was setting up to make the pass on Potter for the lead. The field was reset for the last few laps, and Potter raced across the finish line a half car length lead over Snare. Last weeks feature winner, Tyson Anderson finished a strong third with Rick Beier and James wall rounding out the top five positions.

The Hawks Hobby Heaven Midwest Modified division seen three heat races with a total of twenty-three cars entered. Traveler, Scott Bintz, a Jamestown Speedway regular won the first heat race from outside the pole. Zach Naastad of Hatton, ND also started outside the pole and won the second heat race with Todd Johnson advancing from the sixth starting spot to finish second to Naastad. Canadian, Paul Veert bested the others in the third heat race, leading every lap from the pole.

All twenty-three Midwest Modifieds started the feature event with Paul Veert and Rod Peterson on the front row. This feature race was caution filled as many did not finish including the 2008 track champion, Dustin Strand. Strand was involved in a wreck on the front stretch which he could not avoid, with two other cars starting the melee. Through all the restarts, Veert held on to the lead and won the feature race with Lance Schill having one of his best runs to date as a rookie in the class. Schill finished second to Veert with Todd Johnson advancing from the ninth spot to finish third. Scott Bintz added another top five by finishing fourth as did Bryan LePier, who picked up the hard charger award by advancing ten spots and finishing fifth.

In WISSOTA Late Model race action, last weeks feature winner Brad Seng won the second of two heat races with Howie Schill of West Fargo picking up the win in the first heat race. The feature event seen Brandon Burke of Grand Forks lead almost every lap, and through a couple of cautions, he held onto that lead with Corcoran, Schill and Pederson knocking at the door. With about ten laps complete, Pederson had moved up to challenge Burke for the lead and with three more rounds, Pederson passed Burke in turn four for the lead. Pederson entered Victory Lane for the first time in 2009, a win which Burke would have wanted but still ran strong to finish in the second spot ahead of Veteran, Corcoran. Howie Schill crossed the line for fourth ahead of traveler Jeff Provinzino.

A total of eighteen NOSA Outlaw Sprints supported the night sponsored by Nissan Honda of Grand Forks. Mark Dobmeier made the only return visit to victory lane by passing Casey Mack roughly ten laps into the feature in traffic. Mack won the first heat race of the night with Bob Martin second, both made up the front starting row. Nygaard moved up three spots to finish third. Dobmeier also won the second heat race after starting seventh. Dan Wiskow looked to be comfortable leading the second heat till the pass but still finished second with Brenden Wilde third. The feature race had plenty of action in the caution free twenty-five laps. Martin, Mack, Nygaard raced three wide at times with Nygaard in the mix also. Lap traffic played a part and Martin nabbed the second finishing spot with pole-sitter, Mack, third. Nygaard advanced four spots for fourth as Chris Shirek finished with a top five after starting eleventh. Lee Grosz of Harwood ND, had trouble in the heat race, tangling on the start, hand an awesome run from eighteenth to finish one spot out of the top five!
