GRAND FORKS, ND (May 27) – The Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprint Cars were 26 cars strong for their 25-lap main event. The field was paced by Cory Mack and Trent Stengl, but trouble ensued on the opening lap.
As the pack exited turn four Stengl’s machine went for a tumble. Wade Nygaard, Chris Ranten, Mark Dobmeier, Zach Wilde and a host of others were involved. Dave Glennon was also collected in the incident after miraculously making the feature despite the fact he took a nasty tumble in his heat race.
Cory took the lead on the complete restart while Mitch Mack slid into second with Jordan Adams in tow.
The caution was displayed on lap three, which benefited Brenden Wilde. On the Evergreen Insurance restart, Wilde drove from seventh to third as he was the only driver in the top 10 to run the low side of the speedway. The following lap the #35 was scored in second, but Austin Pierce and Mitch Mack found their groove up on the cushion and regained second and third, respectively.
Pierce then went to work on the Miracle Ear #25 of Cory Mack and made the pass with a beautiful slide job in turn one at the halfway point.
The two-time and defending River Cities Speedway track champion opened up a full straightaway lead over second place running Mark Dobmeier in the closing laps, but a caution with eight to go erased that gap.
Pierce jumped on the throttle as the green resumed the race and put 10 car lengths between himself and Dobmeier. The race was far from over though.
With two circuits remaining, Dobmeier was closing in on Pierce, who found himself in heavy lapped traffic. Pierce attempted to split a pair of lapped cars when he banged wheels with one of them. That opened up the door for Dobmeier, who snuck to the inside and grabbed the lead.
The driver of the Right Choice Electric #13 then cruised to his 132nd career NOSA win. Pierce, Mitch Mack, Wade Nygaard, and Cory Mack rounded out the top five.
