Sward Wins First Modified FeatureIn what had to be a near record for a regular season event at the Bullring, 130 cars were in the pits and spilled into the neighboring prison parking lot to take part in week four of regular season action in Grand Forks. Austin Pierce won his first feature in nearly two years in the NOSA Sprints with Tyler Peterson, Matt Schow, and Cole Greseth each winning their second features of the season. Bryce Sward was also a winner in his Modified debut at the Speedway. Jack Croaker and Austin Pierce brought the 30-lap second leg of the Wayne Anderson cup to green for the Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprints. Andy Pake moved in on Croaker and took second as Pierce led the opening lap. Pierce started working traffic five laps into the race but on the beginning of the eighth lap, Pierce got sideways, leaving Kate Taves and Croaker nowhere to go with the latter doing a slow roll in turn two Croaker's crew did a fantastic job to get him back onto the racing surface. Before Pierce and Pake brought the race back to green. Pake and Dobmeier completed the podium though the race was hampered by a number of cautions until the second and final red of the race, which saw Laela Eisenschenk and Zach Omdahl crash off the back stretch with 14 to go, leading to an open red for a fuel stop. Restarts from then on out when single file for the remainder of the race with the final 11 laps going green to checkered. Pierce dominated in the final green flag run to pick up his 51st career NOSA win and first for car owner Shane Roemeling. Dobmeier was second with Jade Hastings third, Nick Omdahl fourth, and Brendan Mullen fifth. Last week, we told you about the Cirrus Aircraft NLRA Late Models being the fastest six minutes in sports, and they didn't disappoint again as they went green-to-checkered for a second consecutive week. Ryan Corbett and Dustin Strand lead the 26-car field at the start. Corbett inched in front of Strand early, but Strand took the lead down the backstretch and through turns three and four to lead the opening lap. Corbett again led off of turn two on lap two, but Strand took the lead back and brought Tyler Peterson with and entered into a three-wide battle in turn two for the lead on the third circuit. For the final 17 laps, it was another edition of the ‘TPO and Strand show,’ as they swapped the lead back and forth through traffic through the midway point. With ten to go, Peterson made traffic work for him, putting lapped cars between himself and the second place running Strand. With five to go, Strand was doing just as Corbett had done at the beginning of the race and was inching forward at points throughout each lap, though Peterson led back to the flag stand at the end of each circuit. Peterson led throughout the final half of the race to pick up his second Bullring win of the season over Strand, John Seng, Don Shaw, and Chad Becker. Ryan Flaten and Ryan Schow led the 20-lap Happy Harry’s Midwest Mod feature to green. Last week's winner Austin Hunter took second coming off a turn two on the opening lap with Flaten, who was no relation to the Ryan Flaten who raced for decades at the speedway, leading the opening lap. The top three had pulled away from the rest of the field before a caution with 13 to go. Matt Schow replaced brother Ryan in the top three on the restart with Schow continuing past Hunter into second. A pileup in turn two at the midway point again slowed the pace of the race, but Flaten was able to hold the lead when the race went back green as Matt and Ryan Schow became the new second and third place runners, respectively. Another restart with six to go gave Matt Schow all he needed to go side-by-side in an effort to take the top spot away from Flaten as Hunter moved past Ryan Schow back into third. Matt Schow took the lead on the backstretch on the penultimate lap and led the final two circuits to score his second Bullring win of the season over Flaten, Hunter, Ryan Schow, and Justin Olson. Aaron Holtan and Preston Carr paced the field at the beginning of the 20-lap Wissota Modified feature. Holtan led the opening lap as Mike Stearns moved in on Preston Carr for second. Carr got a huge run off of turn two on the third lap, dove down to the bottom of turn three, and took the lead as contact between Stearns and Holtan cost the latter a handful of spots. The first of many cautions started on the fifth lap and set up a double file restart. Carr, Stearns and Joe Thomas went three-wide for the lead when the race went back green, though it was Tyler Peterson nearly running from fourth to first at the beginning of the sixth lap in his initial bid to win two features in one night. Peterson and Carr battled for the top spot while ninth starter Bryce Sward moved into third. Preston Carr was penalized from the lead to the rear of the field on a lap eight restart for a restart violation, giving Peterson the lead. Coming to the halfway point, Sward took the lead and brought Mike Stearns with him past Peterson, who had right rear quarter panel damage at this point. Sward led the field to green one final time with three to go and went on to victory over Stearns, Peterson, 24th started Dustin Strand and Ward Imrie. Street stock veterans Doug VanMill and John Halvorson brought the Big Al’s Construction Street Stock feature to green. What was, unfortunately, a sign of things to come, the initial start was waived off after following a melee in turn one. The restart stuck, however, as third starting Weston Ramsrud led the opening lap with Greg Jose and Trey Hess followed him in the second and third before cautions on the second and third laps. Jose took the lead before the third caution as Cole Greseth moved into a podium spot as he moved past Hess in the second on the fourth lap. The top three went nose to tail for a pair of circuits before they started working lap traffic. Lap seven saw Greseth snooker Jose on the bottom of turn two, grabbing the run off the bottom of turn two and taking the lead. Greseth continued to lead following cautions on laps nine and 14. During those brief green flag runs, Wisconsin racer Levi Randt moved into second as Jose and Hess fought for third. Randt, Jose, and Hess remained nose-to-tail in the closing laps as Greseth pulled away for his second win of the year at the Bullring. Randt, Jose, Hess and Kasey Ussatis rounded out the top five. Racing action continues next week during the Greater Grand Forks Fair with the NOSA Sprints as the headliner on Friday and ending with Baja Races on Sunday afternoon. Full ResultsNOSA Sprints
