Dustin Strand and Mark Dobmeier continued their winning ways as the 71st season of weekly racing action began last Friday night at the Bullring. Bryce Haugeberg and Cole Greseth also scored opening night wins with Jory Berg returning from injury to pick up his first Bullring win in two seasons. Brandon Corbett and defending track champion Dustin Strand started on the point in the 20-lap Cirrus Aircraft NLRA Late Model main event. Scary moment for the field early as fifth place startet Kelsi Pederson spun in turn one. Pederson had finished third in her heat race in her Late Model debut, but moved to the rear of the 17 car field.
Strand led on the restart and was followed into second by Joey Pederson. Strand led by about a straight away as he worked lapped traffic at the midway point. Strand’s last pass was to lap Kelsi Pederson, though the latter had made a charge through the field, eventually finishing tenth. Strand went on to the opening night victory over Joey Pederson, Shane Edginton, Brad Seng, and Ryan Corbett. Mark Dobmeier and Brendan Mullen drew front row starting spots for the 25-lap lid lifter for the Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprint Cars. Dobmeier took the lead at the start and led until Adam Sobolik flipped in turn two on the sixth lap. On the ensuing restart, Blake Egeland, Weston Olson, Gage Pulkrabek, and Tom Egeland were involved in a multi-car pileup on the front stretch. No one was injured, but Tom Egeland was the only one to survive the melee. With the accident cleared, Dobmeier fended off charges by Jack Croaker, who was throwing in a bid for his first career series win. Dobmeier worked well in lapped traffic past the midway point, and built a straightway lead with ten to go. One final caution with three laps remaining gave Croaker one last look at Dobmeier, but it was Dobmeier leading the final three circuits to win his 196th NOSA main event over Croaker, defending series champion Jade Hastings, Andy Pake, and Brendan Mullen. In the 20-lap NLSA Lightning Sprint feature, defending champion Matthew Taves and Dylan Langevin were set to pace the field at the start of the race, but mechanical issues ended Tavves’ race before it began. Langevin’s brother-in-law Hunter Bugge joined him as the new front row as the green flag flew. Following a lap two caution, Brendan Mullen took second as Bugge took the point. Mullen took the lead on lap four and led until ARCA regular Bryce Haugeberg took the lead on lap eight. Shortly thereafter, Mullen headed pit side with mechanical issues as Haugeberg pulled away from the rest of the field. The final restart with five to go gave Langevin on last look for his first career main event win, but it was Haugeberg picking up the opening night win. Emmitt Isane, Loki Bjerke, and Jake Haugeberg rounded out the top five. Jory Berg and Connor Drrewry brought the 20-lap Happy Harry’s Midwest Mod feature to green. Berg took the lead at the start with Cylen Vargason moving to Drewry’s inside to battle for the runner-up position. Austin Hunter followed Vargason into third as Berg started to build a ten car length lead by the midway point. Berg continued to set a torrid pace out front as he ran through lapped traffic with five laps remaining. Berg continued to lap through the rear of the field in the closing laps, picking up his first win since an arm injury all but ended his season last July. Vargason, Hunter, Aaron Blacklance, and Drewry completed the top five. Trey Hess and James Meagher led the field to the green at the beginning of the 20-lap Big Al’s Construction Street Stock main event. Hess took the point at the stars as John Halvorson and Meagher battled for second. Hess continued to lead as Cole Greseth joined the battle for second following a pair of lap two cautions. Greseth took second and was reeling in Hess for the lead just past the midway point when the third caution of the night with nine circuits remaining reset the field. Greseth and Hess went door-to-door for a number of laps before Greseth took the lead for good with four to go, picking up the opening night win. Weston Ramsrud, Greg Jose, and John Halvorson completed the top five. Racing continues Friday night at the Bullring with the same five classes set to battle again at seven o’clock.
