By Mike Spieker GRAND FORKS, N.D. (May 19, 2023) – River Cities Speedway got its 2023 season underway on Friday night with the NOSA Sprints, WISSOTA Modifieds, Street Stocks, and Midwest Mods. Just two months after receiving second and third degree burns to his legs in a fire at Central Arizona Raceway in Casa Grande, AZ, Mark Dobmeier made his first start back in a sprint car on Friday night with the Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprints and was classic Dobmeier. Jack Croaker was fast early on and looked poised to capture his first career NOSA win, but once Dobmeier worked his way forward from the eighth starting position, it became clear that the Buffalo Wild Wings No. 13 was the class of the field. Dobmeier shot by Croaker on lap 18 of 30 to take the point. Once out front, Dobmeier never looked back as he picked up his 176th career NOSA win on round #1 of the Wayne Anderson Cup. It was an eventful night for two-time series champion Austin Pierce. Pierce was involved in a hard wreck during heat race action. The driver of the No. 2A hit the front stretch wall while leading, causing him to come to a sudden stop. Several teams helped Pierce to make repairs before the feature. Pierce started at the tail end of the field and nearly got lapped before the first caution came out. From there, Pierce found his groove and became a contender for a spot on the podium late in the going. However, while racing for second with Croaker, Pierce spun in turn two. He would later run out of fuel, dashing his hopes of a strong run. The race was halted three times for red flags. Jake Berger on lap nine, Brendan Mullen on lap 27 and Weston Olson, who was making his NOSA debut, on lap 29, all got upside down, but walked away uninjured. Seth Klostreich raced to his second career Big Al’s Construction WISSOTA Street Stock feature win; his first since June 26th, 2020. Klostreich and Greg Jose put on a great battle for the point as the lead duo drove away from the rest of the pack. Klostreich was all over the back bumper of Jose and rode right in his tire tracks as the middle was the preferred groove on the track. With eight to go, Klostreich took a peak underneath the No. 28 of Jose. On the following lap, the two were side by side when Jose went up in a big puff of smoke on the front stretch. Jose immediately took his car off the turn one exit as the race stayed under green. Klostreich now had a full straightaway lead and never looked back as he took the win over John Halvorson and Weston Ramsrud. Lance Schill left little doubt in the Happy Harry’s Midwest Mods as he cruised to his fifth career opening night win at River Cities Speedway - his third with the Midwest Mods. Schill dominated the 14 car field, leading all 20 laps around the quarter-mile bullring to take the win over Jory Berg, Justin Olson, Nate Reynolds and Jamie Dietzler. The win was also Schill’s 38th in Midwest Mod competition at River Cities and the 50th of his career at the track. Dustin Strand jumped out to the early lead in the WISSOTA Modified feature and pulled away from second place runner, Tyler Peterson. As Strand approached lapped traffic, however, Peterson reeled him in. Strand was working the extreme high side of the speedway when he dropped his right rear tire off the banking, sending his car off the track in turn two to bring out the yellow. Peterson then inherited the lead and cruised to the win; his 8th in a Modified and 19th overall at River Cities. Racing continues next Friday with WISSOTA Late Models, Midwest Mods, Street Stocks, Modifieds and the Minn-Kota Lightning Sprints. RESULTS:
