GRAND FORKS, ND (May 15) - Ricky Hamel once again triumphed over an extremely stout field of Happy Harry's Midwest Modifieds Friday night at River Cities Speedway
Twenty-six Midwest Mods were signed in to battle at the Bullring, but only the fastest 22 made the grid for the 18 lap A-main. Zach Bruer and Lance Schill led the field to the green with Schill getting the early advantage.
The battle in the early going was between Schill, Eric Haugland, Preston Carr, and Hamel. The four drivers bobbed and weaved through the treacherous ruts in the track and seemingly swapped positions every lap.
A restart on lap four saw Haugland and Hamel drag race into turn one behind Schill. A three wide race for the lead ensued out of turn two and Hamel took the lead down the back stretch as Schill's car began to fade back. It was still a three car fight, however, as Carr once again joined the fray.
The best chance Carr had to take the lead came on lap 12 were he dove to the inside of Hamel, but his run was plagued by the caution flag.
The final caution came with three circuits remaining. The running order had Cole Haugland and Carr lined up behind Hamel. The Evergreen Insurance green flag came out and Hamel got a good jump, leaving Haugland and Carr to fight for second. Hamel cruised to the win and parked his Millenium Chassis in RydellCars.com Victory Lane. Cole Haugland came home in second, followed by Carr, Darren Pfau, and Eric Haugland.
Matt Schow was the race's hard charger, coming from 21st to sixth.
