By Mike Spieker GRAND FORKS, ND (June 5) - The Happy Harry’s Bottle Shops Midwest Modifieds were 32 car strong, but a wild B-main trimmed the field down to the fastest 22. Cole Haugland put his Ford on the pole for the 18 lap feature with Todd Johnson lined up to his outside. ![]()
As soon as the race began, a battle for the lead broke out between Haugland and Johnson. The two drivers race side by side for three consecutive laps with Haugland ultimately prevailing. A lap six restart bunched the field back up and put a hard-charging Preston Carr right on Haugland’s bumper.
The Evergreen Insurance restart put the race back under the green. Matt Schow immediately came from third to challenge for the lead, but a severe push in turn three broke his momentum. That allowed Carr to get a run on Haugland and Carr took full advantage. Carr drove by Haugland on lap nine for the point and Schow was quick to follow with a big time slide job in turn one to take over the runner-up position. The final yellow flew on the white flag lap as a lapped car slowed right in front of the leaders. Schow had one more shot at Carr for the win, but as the field dropped the hammer at the drop of the green flag, Schow relinquished second to Haugland, then third place to Ricky Hamel. All this was way behind Carr, who got a great jump on the restart, as he took his second RCS win in as many races.
