GRAND FORKS, N.D. (August 4, 2017) – Twenty-seven Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprints made up the starting grid for Friday night’s main event. Casey Mack picked up his first River Cities Speedway feature win of the season in a dominating performance.
“It feels good to get back to victory lane in Grand Forks. I feels good to win other places, but winning at River Cities Speedway is something even more special,” said Mack in RydellCars.com Victory Lane. “The car was working really good pretty much everywhere tonight. I could hit the cushion whenever I needed to.”
The first portion of the race was plagued by cautions. A pair of red flags also flew throughout the event for separate flips involving Ty Hanten and Jackson Moffett.
“As the leader, I just wanted to see the race go from green to checkered. I didn’t want to see all of those yellows because it’s tough to know what to do on the restarts,” continued Mack. “But we managed to make it all work out tonight.”
Nick Omdahl led the opening lap of the feature with Hanten and Bob Martin in tow. Martin took the second spot before Mack came cruising forward to take second and the lead on lap four.
Omdahl then followed Mack in second as Martin held the third position.
With 10 to go, Martin was challenged by Jade Hastings for the final podium position. The two drivers swapped the spot lap after lap until Martin secured the position with seven to go.
It was a roller coaster night for NOSA point leader, Austin Pierce. Pierce was working his way forward early on in the feature when his nose wing became detached while running in fourth on lap four. Under one of the cautions, Pierce surrendered his position to get the nose wing taken off by his crew, which forced him to restart in 13th.
Pierce battled back in the second half of the race. Somehow the two-time River Cities Speedway track champion fought his way into third with four laps to go and had second in his sights. Coming to the white flag, Pierce executed a slide job on Martin to take second, but the two veteran drivers made contact down the front stretch, which resulted in Martin spinning to a stop.
Martin was charged for the caution and forced to the tail of the field for the green-white-checkered finish. On the final restart, Mack drove away from Pierce and Jordan Adams to take the win.
The NOSA Sprints will be back in action Saturday night at Devils Lake Speedway.
