By Mike Spieker GRAND FORKS, N.D. (May 7, 2021) – River Cities Speedway opened their 2021 season on Friday night with 77 cars checked in for action. Lance Schill, Jory Berg and Joe Potter all took the WISSOTA feature wins while Brendan Mullen scored his first NOSA win at the Bullring. Mullen claimed his third career Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprint Car feature win and his first at River Cities Speedway. The 18-year-old Grand Forks driver started on the pole and led the opening lap over 2019 series champion Nick Omdahl.
A lap five restart gave Omdahl another shot at Mullen, and he made the most of it. Omdahl drove around Mullen to take the point and Austin Pierce followed him into second. Another caution on lap 10 for Pierce moved Mullen back up to second for the restart. Mullen regained the lead with a textbook slider in turns one and two after the race resumed. Defending series champion Jade Hastings ran into issues on lap 15 after contact with Jack Croaker while battling for third, which broke the steering on the No. 8H. The damage ended Hastings’ night early and he was credited with a 17th place finish. Once out front, Mullen set sail as he cruised to the win. Omdahl finished second as Pierce rebounded to round out the podium. Wade Nygaard and Tom Egeland rounded out the top five. “I’ve been coming here my whole life and I’ve seen a million races here. This feels really awesome to win one,” said Mullen after the race. “About five laps in I knew the car was on rails. Todd Slocum did a masterful job on the set up tonight. When I had Omdahl and Pierce pass me, I was like ‘Oh boy. They are way faster than we are,’ but luckily Pierce made a mistake and I got to reset mentally. Omdahl and I had a couple of really good battles on those restarts and that was a ton of fun. It feels really good to get a win at River Cities.” A strong field of 19 WISSOTA Late Models made the call for their 20-lap main event. NLRA veteran Steve Anderson sat on the pole, flanked by Lance Schill to his outside. As the green flag waved, Schill rode the middle groove to take the lead on the opening lap. Schill ran away unchallenged until the halfway point when Shane Edginton reeled him in. Edginton pulled alongside Schill in turns three and four just as the caution flew. On the restart, the race was for second as Schill cruised to a comfortable lead. Second-place runner Dustin Strand closed the gap between himself and Schill late in the going, but couldn’t mount a serious challenge for the lead. Strand, Edginton, Brad Seng and Joey Pederson rounded out the top five. The WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature had a thrilling battle for the lead at the drop of the green flag. Pole sitter Nathan Raasakka and Scott Bintz went head-to-head battling for the race lead before Reise Stenberg and Ryan Schow entered the fray. Bintz took the lead with Stenberg and Schow in tow. Schow moved up to the second spot before tracking down Bintz for the lead. Mired in traffic, Schow made a bold three-wide move to take the lead exiting turn four, but as he entered in turn one he looped his No. 28 machine around to bring out the caution. That put Bintz back into the lead for the ensuing restart. As the race resumed, eighth-place starter Jory Berg was all over Bintz for the lead. After working on him lap after lap, Berg found his opening exiting turn four coming to the white flag. Berg took the point on the final lap and went on to take the win. Joe Potter left little doubt in the WISSOTA Street Stock feature, leading wire to wire. Potter started on the outside of the front row of the 15-lapper and led every trip around the three-tenths mile oval. The win was Potter’s first at River Cities since opening night in 2010 on April 23rd. Nick Minske, Chase Boen, James Meagher and Ryan Johnson rounded out the top five. Next Friday night, A-mods join the card along with the NLRA Late Models, Midwest Mods and Street Stocks. * RESULTS: NOSA Sprint Cars: A Feature (25 Laps): 1. 11M-Brendan Mullen[1]; 2. 0-Nick Omdahl[3]; 3. 2A-Austin Pierce[6]; 4. 9N-Wade Nygaard[5]; 5. 14-Tom Egeland[10]; 6. 8BALL-Jack Croaker[7]; 7. 99-Jordan Graham[11]; 8. 20A-Jordan Adams[13]; 9. 55-Nick Ranten[2]; 10. 26-Blake Egeland[9]; 11. 10TRB-Bob Martin[17]; 12. 10S-Josh Swangler[15]; 13. 17-Zach Omdahl[4]; 14. 4-Colton Young[14]; 15. 41-Travis Strandell[16]; 16. 47-Sabrina Hockenson[19]; 17.
