Riley wins thriller, Pierce completes three-peat & Schill scores first career win at the Bullring6/20/2020 By Mike Spieker The Steffes Street Stock Tour, presented by Big Al’s Construction, brought in a season-high 32 WISSOTA Street Stocks on Friday night at River Cities Speedway – and arguably put on the best feature of the night. Front row starters Justin Vogel and Andy Rossow were eligible for the $3,000-to-win back row challenge, presented by River Cities Speedway. However, with the incredibly talented field on hand, both drivers elected to start on the front row for the $700-to-win main event. Vogel jumped out to the early lead with Jake Froemke in tow. Vogel led until the lap 15 restart where his machine did not take off, which caused a six-car pileup in turn four. That handed the lead over to Froemke.
As the green waved once again, Froemke, who suffered damage when Vogel’s car slowed on the previous restart, spun in turn three, ending his bid at a win. Jonny Carter then inherited the lead with Royce Jawaski riding in second, but Eric Riley made quick work of the cars inside the top five as he cruised from fourth to second in two laps. Riley caught Carter in the closing laps and pulled even with the defending national champion down the back straightaway on the final lap. Riley dove to the inside of the speedway in turn three and completed a slide job off turn four. Carter countered with a crossover as the drag race was on to the checkers. At the line, Riley edged out Carter by 0.004 seconds in a photo finish. The win was Riley’s first at River Cities. Trey Hess, Jawaski, and 17th place starter and hard charger award winner Kyle Anderson rounded out the top five. In what was a battle to the checkers, Lance Schill claimed his first career Late Model victory. Schill started on the outside of the front row but ran behind 51-year racing veteran Tom Corcoran. On lap five, Schill worked his way around Corcoran to take the lead but Corcoran continued to battle back on the inside. As the leaders approached lapped traffic, last week’s winner and defending NLRA series champion, Brad Seng, entered the fray. Schill and Seng ran three-wide with a lapped car as they passed under the white flag before making contact in turn one. The contact slowed Seng’s momentum just enough for Schill to pull away by two car lengths. That’s all that Schill needed to come around and score his first career victory. Seng and Dustin Strand completed the podium. For the third week in a row, Austin Pierce topped the field of Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprints. Pierce dominated the 25-lap feature to collect his 30th career feature win. He now sits two wins behind Casey Mack for fourth on the all-time NOSA wins list. The win was the first time since Mark Dobmeier in June of 2018 that a NOSA driver won three consecutive events. Jade Hastings got upside down in a big way on the lap 15 restart. Hastings walked away uninjured but was done for the night. It looked as though Randy Thompson was destined for his first career River Cities Speedway win during the Happy Harry’s Bottle Shops Midwest Modified feature. Thompson started on the pole and led the first 11 circuits around the Bullring before third-place starter Reise Stenberg began to apply pressure for the lead. Stenberg, using the extreme low side of the speedway, poked his nose underneath Thompson exiting turn two on lap 12 to draw even with the Lakota, N.D. driver down the back straightaway. Using the low groove again in turns three and four, Stenberg cleared for the lead off the corner. Once out front, Stenberg quickly distanced himself from the rest of the pack and cruised to his first win of the season at River Cities. Thompson hung on for second, followed by Lance Schill, John Halvorson, and Matt Schow. Two drivers were clearly the class of the field during the Lucas Oil POWRi Minn-Kota Lightning Sprint feature. The race for the win came down between second-year driver Bryce Haugeberg and veteran driver Alan Truscinski. Haugeberg held the advantage over Truscinski early, but Truscinski rallied back to find a way around Haugeberg on lap eight to take the lead. Just as he did, however, the caution waved and scoring went back to the last completed lap giving Haugeberg the lead for the ensuing restart. Truscinski was all over the rear bumper of Haugeberg in the closing laps, but Haugeberg raced to the checkers unwavered to claim his first career win.
