Tanner Theis Wins First Midwest Mod FeatureGrand Forks, N.D. (August 19, 2022) - With the summer winding down, a perennial favorite at the speedway saw the annual School Bus races run alongside weekly racing action at the Bullring Friday night. Three drivers ended the night with their first wins of the season, as Jade Hastings Aaron Turnbull, and Tanner Theis joined four-time Big Al's Construction Street Stock winner Tucker Pederson in RydellCars.com victory lane. Austin Pierce and Brendan Mullen led the Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprints to green for their 25 lap main event. Mullen took the early lead, as a returning Tim Estenson challenged Pierce for second. A lap three caution and restart saw Wade Nygaard move past Estenson for third before Blake Egeland went for a scary ride off of the first turn. He emerged from his destroyed No. 26 ok. Estenson got the best restart, regaining third, and resuming a bid for second with Pierce. Estenson took second on the seventh lap, setting his sights on Mullen's lead. With ten to go, Jade Hastings joined the now three car battle for the lead, which was now held by Estenson in lapped traffic. The great three car battle came to an unfortunate end, as a blown engine in Mullen's No. 11M collected Pierce and rookie Gage Pulkrabek, ending the evening for all three. Estenson, looking for his first NOSA win, was unable to hold off the hard charging Hastings, as the latter led the final eight laps for his first win of the season. Nygaard, Mark Dobmeier, and Jack Croaker completed the top five. Hastings, with his regular crew enjoying a weekend off at the drag races in Brainerd, had the 2003 Track Championship winning crew of Mike Johnson and speedway Hall-of-Famer Jeff Leebrick as help to score the win. Blake Anderson and Tom Corcoran paced the Cirrus Aircraft Late Model 20 lap feature for the second time this season. Corcoran took the point at the start, bringing two-time winner Dustin Strand with him into second.
A lap two caution, then pileup on the frontstretch on the restart slowed the action, but when green flag racing resumed, fifth starting Aaron Turnbull moved into third as Strand took the lead. With Strand and Turnbull as the new lead duo on a lap five restart, the pair opened up ground on the rest of the field as Joey Pederson took third. Turnbull took the lead on the eighth lap, and continued as the leader through one last caution with six circuits remaining. Strand and newest third place holder Shane Edginton went three wide with Turnbull as the field saw five fingers from the flagstand. They repeated the feat the following trip by, but Turnbull was strong enough to keep Strand and Edginton behind him, collecting his first win since the 2020 Seitz Memorial. Brody Troftgruben and Brad Seng were fourth and fifth. Joel Olson and Scott Bintz shared the front row at the beginning of the Happy Harry's Midwest Mod 20 lap feature. Bintz shot out to an early advantage as Tanner Theis improved from fourth to second. With Jory Berg in third, the field watched Bintz slowly pull away, as Berg reeled in Theis for second, and Matt Schow entered the chat in fourth. Schow had moved into second in lapped traffic with five laps left, but a turn four pileup with four to go gave Theis just what he needed to score win number one. He took the lead on the bottom of the following double file restart, beating Schow, Bintz, Berg, and Jamie Dietzler back to the checkers. Josh Barker and Daniel Aberle led the 20 lap Big Al's Construction Street Stock feature to green, with Aberle leading the opening lap. Tucker Pederson followed into second, moving to Aberle;s outside, and taking the lead on lap three. Pederson left Aberle and John Halvorson to battle for second, as the leader built a decent lead in front of the field. Before the midway point, Seth Klostreich and Trey Hess went three wide with Aberle for third. Hess won that battle, and finished shadowing Halvorson for second as Pederson went on to win his fourth feature of the year. Aaron Blacklance and Klostreich were fourth and fifth. The school bus races saw Connie Klava pick up the victory in the Lightning McQueen bus. A yearly fan favorite, the race is always sure to include thunderous body slams throughout the 12 lap, 12 bus race.
