GRAND FORKS, N.D. (September 17, 2018) – The River Cities Speedway 410 Sprint Car points race has been a tight one all year long. Entering Friday’s season finale at the Grand Forks three-tenths mile dirt oval, Nygaard and Pierce were separated by just five points with Nygaard having the advantage.
Following the August 31st make-up feature earlier in the night, the two Grand Forks drivers were tied. Nygaard gained a point during heat race competition, but Pierce finished one spot better than Nygaard in the 25-lap Buffalo Wild Wings main event.
That left the two former River Cities Speedway track champions tied at the end of the night. In the event of a tie, the River Cities Speedway rulebooks have no tie-breaker, meaning Nygaard and Pierce will be co-champions of the 410 Sprint Car points title.
Both drivers finished with 10 top fives and 12 top tens in the 16 Sprint Car events held at the Bullring this season. Nygaard had three visits to RydellCars.com Victory Lane, compared to Pierce’s one.
The championship marks Nygaard’s 10th career River Cities Speedway track championship and Pierce’s second consecutive and fourth in the last five years.
Nygaard also claimed the 2018 NOSA series title, which was also the 10th of his career.
The shared points title is the first at River Cities Speedway since 1993 between Brian Strand and Dale Skytland in the Late Model division.
