Schatz Goes All In and Doubles Up at The Legendary Bullring
The World of Outlaws drivers take a lot of risks and gambles in a night of racing. Donny Schatz is one of those gamblers. For the Outlaws gambling was a way of life. Now the only gamble drivers face is how well they can set up a car to qualify well.
With a nearly perfect track in qualifying time trials. The first car to take the track was the 91k of Kyle Fedyk, one of The Legendary Bullring's weekly "Canadian Invaders" making the trip from Estevan, Saskatchewan. Fedyk sets the qualifying bar at 10.269 at 105 mph for a lap average speed. A little bit later Thompson, ND car (1k) of Chris Shirek turns a lap at 10.094 at 107 mph. but hold the phone... June's winner (4) Cody Darrah breaks into the 9 second club and the only driver to do so this night, at 9.966 108 mph lap average. Schatz came in 3rd quick at 10.035 107 mph. Eldora Kings Royal winner "King" Brad Sweet was second quick on the night.
Northern Late Model Racing Association Late Models were the support class with the unannounced return of last weeks a-main winner (11D) of Pat Doar. A car count of 24 Lates came to race and included in that was (15) Donny Schatz doing double duty in the Petro Stopping Center, Fastlane Car Wash #15 late model and his TSR STP Sprint.
The heat winners: Heat 1 saw (43) Brian Bernotas who opened up a fairly good lead early and held off the pack til the checkers flew.
Heat 2: (15) Schatz opens up a half a straightaway lead to win the heat. Heat 3: (7p) Joey Pederson opened up a 3.100 second lead on (12s) Brad Seng to win heat #3.
The A-Main was not a run away at all for Schatz who started on outside front row with (43) Brian Bernotas on the point, Schatz led the first 8 laps building up an early 2 second lead on (7p) of Pederson who drove under Schatz off turn 2 in lap traffic, to lead until the last lap with (12s) Brad Seng in pursuit. Coming down for the checkers, Schatz drives off of 4 and gets Pederson just before the line to score the win.
The World of Outlaws STP sprint car heats went like this:
(63) Chad Kemenah and (11) Steve Kinser on the front row. Kinser grabs the lead off the start. A little shuffling mid pack for the most part pretty much a good race. Main Qualifiers were (4) Darrah, (13) Mark Dobmeier and (71m) Joey Saldana. (11) Steve Kinser wins, (63) Kemenah and S. Kinser go to the Dash.
(82) Winters and (6) Bill Rose on the front row Rose filling in for his driver David Gravel who was ill after Knoxville, Row 2 was (49) Brad Sweet and (11k) Kraig Kinser. Rose gets the green and is off like a missle, Sweet moved to 2nd in 2 laps Rose comes into lap traffic with 6 laps down, almost makes contact with (35) Brenden Wilde putting him 1 lap down. The finish (6) Rose and (49) Sweet to the Dash. (11k) K. Kinser, (82) Winters and (9w) Wimmer to the A-main.
With (8) Casey Mack and (7s) Jason Sides in row 1, (7) Craig Dollansky and (15) Schatz in row 2 things are about to get real. Green Drops (7s) Sides jumps out to a fairly good lead with Casey Mack and Dollansky in tow. Red comes out just before the half way point. (92) Mitch Mack sailed over corner #2 and took 1 complete roll landing on all 4 wheels. The car appeared fixable, and Mack walked away OK. On the restart it's Sides, Casey Mack, Dollansky, and Schatz and Dollansky take advantage of Casey Mack in the corners and the finish, Sides and Dollansky to the Dash. Casey Mack, Donny Schatz, and (18) Ian Madsen will go to the A-Main.
(20w) Greg Wilson and (29) Kerry Madsen fill out the front row and row 2 had 1k of Chris Shirek of Thompson, North Dakota and Current World of Outlaws STP series points leader (9) Daryn Pittman there was no holding back here either. Ten laps later, it was (20w) Greg Wilson and (9) Pittman to the dash, Pittman gained 2 positions to take the 2nd. (29) K. Madsen, (19) Justin Henderson and (1k) Shirek all transfer to the 40 lap A-Main.
The inversion draw was 4 positions, which put (15) Schatz on the outside of row 1 and (9) Pittman on the pole.
A fairly uneventful dash with some very competitive cars in it. Schatz getting by Daryn Pittman for the win. The top 5:
(15) Schatz (9) Pittman (49) Brad Sweet (4) Darrah and (11) S. Kinser.
(9n) Wade Nygaard and 17 year old (20A) Jordan Adams on the front row it was Adams able to hold off challenges from Wade Nygaard and Omdahl. (92) Mitch Mack (14) Tom Egeland and (26) Blake Egeland did not start the C-Main. Transferring to the rear of the B-Main was (20A) of Adams and (9n) Nygaard.
A gentle mix of local racers and WoO regulars made up this field where only 4 will transfer to the back of the 40 lap A-Main. (51) Paul McMahan and (1) Sammy Swindell filled out the front row and the second row had (91k) Fedyk and (25) Cory Mack Other notables in this race were 44W of Austen Wheatley and 83 of Tim Kaeding.
A solid effort from (83) Kaeding and (20K) Kennedy put them on the back row of the A- Main the 11th row was filled out by (1) Swindell and (51) McMahan).
With track conditions still tacky and racey the fans could be assured of an exciting A-Main. The line-up was stacked with (15) Schatz on the pole and (9) Pittman along side row 2 featured (49) Brad Sweet and (4) Darrah. (15) Schatz takes the green opens up a good lead into lap traffic on lap 5 driving around (20k) Kennedy.
